Examples of key rings have been found as far back as Roman times when they were worn as an item of jewellery as well as having a practical purpose. This was a combination of a ring and a small key, hence the name 'keyring'! Since Romans wore togas with no pockets, the only option for keeping small objects from getting lost were to keep them in a purse or wear them on one's person. Today the keyring has evolved to become a fashion accessory in all shapes and sizes.
